Whitehall Road Leeds police: Live updates as emergency services respond to city centre incident

Police, fire crews and ambulances have rushed to an incident in Leeds city centre amid reports of a “suspicious package”.

The huge emergency services response came after officers were told shortly after 8am today (April 17) that an item had been delivered to a building at the Wellington Place office development.

The building has been evacuated and cordoned off, as checks are carried out.

There are currently two police cars, a fire engine, an ambulance and an ambulance incident response unit parked outside the office building on Whitehall Road, as well as another unidentified emergency services vehicle.

Whitehall Road remains open to traffic.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: “At 8.13 am today, police were called to a report of a potentially suspicious package that had been delivered to a building in Wellington Place, Leeds.

“The building has been evacuated whilst emergency services carry out precautionary checks.”

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Yorkshire Ambulance Service said: “Ambulance resources were on scene as a precautionary measure, but not required.”

Emergency services called out to Whitehall Road

All emergency services have been called out to an ongoing incident in Leeds city centre.

Police, firefighters and paramedics have rushed to Whitehall Road, with police erecting a cordon outside an office building and directing people away from the scene.

We have contacted West Yorkshire Police for more information on this breaking incident.

Pictures show firefighters at the scene, as well as police officers guarding a cordon.

The cordon is in place around the entrance to 7 Wellington Place, home of the Yorkshire Government Hub where thousands of civil servants work.

The Yorkshire Evening Post understands the building has been evacuated.

Ambulances are 'precautionary measure'

A spokesperson for the Yorkshire Ambulance Service has told the YEP that “ambulance resources were on scene as a precautionary measure, but not required”.

Footage shows the extent of the huge emergency services response on Whitehall Road this morning, with police, ambulances and the fire service called to the incident - as the office building remains cordoned off.

Police release statement

West Yorkshire Police has confirmed that the incident relates to a “potentially suspicious package.

In a statement, the force said: “At 8.13 am today, police were called to a report of a potentially suspicious package that had been delivered to a building in Wellington Place, Leeds.

“The building has been evacuated whilst emergency services carry out precautionary checks.”

A tent has been erected at the scene, as precautions are taken.

The tent is attached to a vehicle parked within the cordon.

An officer said that the scene was not likely to be in place for long.

The cordon has now been removed, although two police cars are still parked on Whitehall Road.
